Look, I’m not sure I’m buying this trend exactly… but anything that involves chocolate warrants an open mind!!

I was recently asked to contribute over at the diet blog, Diets In Review. I was honoured as there is heaps of information and it was a pleasure offering a little insight on the power of meditation, a subject near and dear to my heart. I take on the power of meditation in battling stress as well as weight loss, so check it out!
Take a read, and while you’re over there be sure to peruse some of the other information on health and fitness.
Living out in the sticks as I do, the choices are few and far between for yoga instruction, so retreats offer me the face to face guidance and feedback, not to mention valuable adjustments that are just not possible in my own living room, regardless who I’ve got playing on my TV screen.
However, as much as I love the retreats, inevitably the physical is inextricably combined with the mental, a fact I am never quite fully prepared for. The yoga is often intense. The body is challenged, stretched, nudged and eased into deeper representations of the postures. But as the body opens, lengthens and surrenders… well, a whole lotta other stuff tends to emerge as well. Call me repressed… uptight, perhaps… even hung up. As a reserved Canadian, I’ll accept each of them, because the fact is, while I wasn’t yet prepared or ready to see my growth on the mat translate to growth in other areas of my life, most of the other attendees were eager and ready to let it happen.
In amongst the fresh insights and perspectives, there were also tears, sobs and outright wails. As one of only a few other repressed, uptight and hung up participants, I was without doubt, uncomfortable. But, it was a real eye opener to observe how yoga could prove itself such an effective facilitator in profound awareness and change.
Whether it’s a retreat, a program geared to target not only the physical aspects of a practice but also the mental and spiritual, or simply a class, folks are finding healing on the mat in its many forms. And, if you read on, you’ll find not surprisingly, that an entirely new brand of psychotherapy is finding legs because of it.

We often hear about the benefits of yoga as it pertains to spiritual and mental health, but is there a tangible connection to one’s fitness and, more specifically, can I lose a few pounds doing it?
I already enjoy the stress busting aspects of a regular… OK, semi-regular… practice, but how much of what I’m doing actually targets my trouble spots- those zones of frustration such as my tummy and thighs… OK, and bum and perhaps, and the fleshy wings accumulating under my newly minted 40 year old arms?
Well, those of us who would like to look to a less intense, non-impact method of achieving a level of fitness, can take heart. Studies show that yoga lowers levels of stress hormones and increases insulin sensitivity–a sign your body reads to burn food as fuel rather than store it as fat. Yay!
If you thought yoga had to be silent and solemn, you and your kids haven’t tried a new brand of “om.”
Whether your child needs something extra to help manage stress or simply wants an avenue of expression outside of competitive sports, yoga for kids is a top alternative, says Marsha Wenig, founder of the internationally acclaimed YogaKids. “There are about 1,000 poses in traditional, physical yoga,” she says. “We use about 200 of them.”
A new site design… to represent our renewed vision and spirit!
Mommy Om is shaping up to be the formost presence of yoga for families on the web. In addition to first hand accounts of parent’s practice, with or without their children, Mommy Om will provide a wealth of resources for introducing and involving your children in the remarkable world of yoga.
Posts have been in fits and starts these last many weeks… Ok, months… but MommyOm will be back in a little over a week with regular posts… AND REGULAR PRACTICE… Ahem.
We have officially settled into our Mexican vacation. Day #2 has come to an end and I do believe everyone will be in a better sleep cycle beginning tonight. Which means, an early, uninterrupted, practice tomorrow morning. I love practicing yoga when we’re here… it’s just a matter of making time for it and early mornings are my favourite here. The waves, the sunrise… before the workers are up clanging down by the pool… before the other vacationers are up, all boisterous, setting up for the day or heading to breakfast… before the smell of bacon fills the air.
Doors open, breeze off of the Caribbean…. breathe….. tomorrow it is!
