From RN Central: 28 Great Yoga Moves in the Office

My office chair is HORRIBLE!  It’s not unusual for me to hobble away from my desk, bent over like an old woman crawling out of a shoe.

Courtesy of RN Central, here are a whole bunch of great moves to keep you walking, straight and narrow, that you can do easily at your desk or in the office:

Even if you don’t think of yourself as a typical yogi, yoga can be a very beneficial addition to your day. Taking breaks at the office is integral to staying flexible and healthy during the day, and you can supplement your normal stair climbs or walk around the building with these yoga poses. Whether or not you’ve tried yoga before or have studied the health benefits of yoga, try to find a peaceful spot in your office to stretch, strengthen your muscles, and regain your composure.

  1. Side benders: The first pose on this video will stretch out your neck, core and back. Just remember to keep your shoulders back and chest open.
  2. Shoulder rolls: Even if you don’t think you’re particularly stressed at work, you probably hold a lot of tension in your shoulders. Roll them out with this pose.
  3. Chair Pose: You’ll only pretend to be sitting in your chair as you do this pose, which strengthens your thighs, hips and hamstrings.
  4. Neck stretch: Another technique to immediately release tension and help yourself relax is this neck stretch.
  5. Tadasana: One of the most basic yoga poses, all you really have to do is stand with your feet together, practicing good posture and relieving back pain.
  6. Triangle pose: Anyone can do this pose, and as you become more advanced, you can focus on opening and stretching your hips and looking up to your other hand.
  7. Big Mind Meditation: Sit comfortably on the floor in this pose to quiet your mind.
  8. Standing tree pose: This is a great pose to do at work because it centers your mind and body while calming your nerves and helping you de-stress.
  9. Chair Twist: Your back will get a good, strong stretch with this pose you can do in your office chair.
  10. Warrior II Pose: Get a good stretch while strengthening your arms, thighs and legs at the same time.

Practice Yoga… From the Right Brain

According to scientists, if you see the dancer turning clockwise, you’re operating more dominantly from the right-brain… left-brain if she’s turning counter-clockwise.  Supposedly, if you stare at her foot and its shadow, you can actually turn her in the other direction.  Ummmm… OK… yes, but now I have a headache….

To summarize the characteristics of each…

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS:  uses logic, detail oriented, facts rule, words and language, present and past, math and science, comprehension and knowing, order/pattern perception, reality based, forms strategies, practical, safe;

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS: uses feeling, “big picture” oriented, imagination rules, symbols and images, present and future, philosophy & religion, can “get it” (i.e. meaning), believes, appreciates, spatial perception, knows object function, fantasy based, presents possibilities, impetuous and risk taking.

The bottom line is we need both to function.  But sometimes… say, when you’re trying something new, or wanting to accomplish a work of some creativity… or perhaps just needing to get through a yoga practice with a shred of self-esteem (ahem!), it’s nice to just turn off that left side… that pesky and insistent part of your head that continuously reminds you how ridiculously bad you are at whatever you are doing.  Sometimes it’s important- no, essential-  to just go with the flow and allow the freedom of imagination, fantasy and creativity, the right- brain, to take hold.

Not an easy task.  However, as I found during my last practice, it’s possible…

And So It Was…

Look… I take help where I can get it. And where I got it- where I needed to get it- was from my old stand-by when motivation is hiding somewhere under the carpet, Baron.  Baron and his Bootcamp in a Box.Baron Baptiste Bootcamp in a Box
I did not intend to rely on a CD.  However, I know myself… which is why I carry the Box with me– on most every trip!  Anyways, I never did get up early.  Husband was off golfing.  It was lunch time.  I set the kids up- yes, in front of the tube- so I could get an uninterrupted half hour.  While, perhaps not entirely uninterrupted, Baron’s 20 minute Core Flow CD followed by his guided meditation was what I needed.

Understand this is no paid plug.  While not a true devotee, I am partial to my own practice… when I do it, I do love his style of yoga and the way he teaches.

I also enjoy his guided meditation.  It’s only 10 minutes and perhaps tomorrow I will try to extend it on my own.  I swear, today I saw colours through my third eye this afternoon.  Colours, I say!  And tingly fingers….

Oh, yeah… It’s Green

Green.  Not only in colour, but ecologically as well.

mat green

The Eco-Friendly Green Yoga Mat mat is an anti-microbial, leaf green and the first of its kind. If you’re looking for the quality and performance of a traditional sticky mat, but less impact on the environment, look no further. With an eco-friendly manufacturing process, 25% of the mat is made of plant based materials, without heavy metals or ph.

It’s nice to know, as you are lying with nose buried into mat- repeatedly- that what you’re inhaling is just green.  Green.  Green.

So, go ahead.  Deep breath in!

Summer’s Gettin’ Away…. And Fit Couture for Review!

This summer is rolling by way too fast! We’re on the road now after just too much busy-ness to get into here. But our vacation has begun….

And here on vacation, let me tell you what I brought for my running/yoga wear. Two things….

These:

And this:

Both items from Fit Couture.

I am over the moon for the Saratoga Shorts. They have been run in, yoga’d in, swam in our lake in, gardened in…. they do it all. Their shape and size remain intact. And I really like the cut of the wasteband. Love. Them. In fact, I am about to order another pair.

I also love their Miami II Top. I use it for running and yoga. I am blessed with fried eggs for boobs so the support for me is more than adequate. I am planning on ordering the cropped version along with the new pair of shorts as I prefer the flexibility of more of a bra type top.

There is nothing like a hot outfit for motivation…. Thanks Fit Couture!!

Baptiste… When I’m Struggling With Motivation

When I’m having a little trouble getting a practice going myself, I turn to Baron.

I don’t have the benefit of a class nearby to depend on when I’m in need of guidance so this handy dandy set of CD’s is great in a pinch… and when I just want to merely follow rather than be thinking about what postures I want/need to come next. I just plain love this set of CD’s.

There is the 75 minute Vinyasa. It never seems like over an hour and I feel like I’ve touched on every muscle by the end.

There are a couple of shorty 20 minute practices for when I’m in need of just a little perk.

Now that I have something of a dedicated space, with a CD player, and as I continue training through the summer (after this next fun tri, half marathon second weekend in August) I plan to be using these more.

I get so tired of my own voice in my head I have to remember I’ve got a session with Baron I can always turn to….
