Paddle Board Yoga- Trend… Really?

It wasn’t too long ago that I wrote about another trend in yoga that involved smoking pot… and I sort of thought that was a little out there.

But there’s another trend making its way through the yogic ranks and, as someone who lives near a lake, while I love the idea of it, I’m really not sure how, at $2000 bucks a pop just in equipment alone, it could really even catch on.

Yoga atop a paddle board on the water.  Everything about it sounds wonderfully peaceful with the additional benefit of really targeting the core, as you work to keep yourself steady and not flipped over into the water.

Again, the heat of the sun on your body… sitting only centimetres above the cool water… the gentle lapping of the waves… seagulls…. It really sounds idyllic.

According to the instructor in the video below as well as others who are leading the trend, while balancing on the board helps you achieve a much more thorough workout for the core, it is really the connection to nature that is the biggest draw.  As you quietly practice, there is a whole other world of aquatic flora and fauna just beneath you.

Currently, I think it has grown popular in places like Florida, though more and more they seem to be cropping up all around the U.S.  It’s definitely made my list to try… though, given the outlay for a paddle board, I only have an old windsurfer at my disposal.

I’ll let you know how it goes…..

Excavating Etsy: Muladhara Pant from Grateful Threads

In my hunt for something a little more versatile in a yoga pant, my first stop was, of course, the wild, woolly and whimsical world of Etsy.

My only criteria as I began perusing the many beautiful options was that I did not- DID. NOT.- want the typical, black, tight-fitting, lycra tight sort that tends to prevail in the seemingly endless world of yoga drawers.

I am looking for something that I can yoga in.  I’m also looking for something to sleep lounge in. Run errands in. Maybe even dress up and go “out” in.

I found several options, that will inevitably find their way here in future posts, I’m sure.  But what struck my eye today, came from the lovely shop of Grateful Threads.

In case you’re wondering, Muladhara or root (foundation) chakra, and is located at the base of the spine, your tail bone and refers to instinct, security, survival and also to basic human potentiality.

These pants are beautiful.  I can see them as truly multi-purpose, satisfying my entire wish list, which probably, subconsciously, also included instinct, security, survival and potentiality!  I could see easily wearing these on my soccer mom circuit but also, with the right tank and in the right colour- I smell plum or eggplant!- out to the local hot-spot for dinner.  I can also see this on my next trip- perfect for hours on the plane and chowing at Chili’s Too hanging at airports!

The Muladhara Pant is made from a 100% organic cotton/hemp combo that will soften with each wash.  They are hand-dyed people, by the hands of Leanna, herself at Grateful Threads.  And in a multitude of gorgeous, saturated colours ranging from conservative black to colours like “brazil nut” to “oxblood red”.

I wubs that I found these pants… and just in time for Mother’s Day!

Thank you Grateful Threads!

Happy Thursday!

A little bit of unadulterated playfulness in anticipation of the weekend:

Happy Earth Day… Get Your Yoga On!

Happy Earth Day, all!

In honour of all things earth, lets talk what we can do to combine our love of yoga with our love of this wondrous host that sustains us.

1. Get outside with your mat.  OK, so it still might only be slightly above freezing in some parts (ahem. mine.), but I bet it warms up some by this afternoon.  Even if it’s just a quick sun salute out on the lawn… bring your practice closer to the soil on this special day!

2. Walking meditation. Find a favourite spot outside, take off your shoes, and walk it.  Back and forth, with method and deliberation.  Feel the sensations in your feet: every grab of your toes, the pressure in your heels.  Breathe deeply. Welcome thoughts as you patiently dismiss them. Yes, to your neighbours, you’ll sort of look like a victim of the bodysnatchers, but who cares?!  They’ll have no idea what they’re missing and you’ll feel invigorated by the experience!

3. Sitting meditation.  Again… find a favourite spot outdoors, arrange your preferred seat, and sit. Be. ‘Nuff said.

4. Get outside with the kids. There is nothing to ground you to our Mother, like fully embracing that within yourself. Even with the screaming, crying and whining… OK, maybe that’s just my brood.

5. Unplug for mercy’s sake.  Turn off the God-awful tube, X-Box, PS, wii, computer (… yeah. right.) Nothing says we love you Earth, like conserving a little energy and getting people away from screens gets everybody expending a little for a change.

6.  Today… water is for drinking.  Take a break from flushing, washing, watering.

7.  Sit down with your family and make a “Conservation Commitment”.  Talk about some ways you all can impact the Earth less, why it’s so important and sign a contract that seals the deal.

8.  For this day, as you move about your daily lives, keep conservation in your consciousness.  When I approach the fridge and grab for something, I like to ask, “does this really nourish me?”  Same goes for your activities today, “Does this help or hurt?”

It’s a beautiful, wonderful day.  Thank Earth.

Get Rid of the Smellies: Love My Mat!

I have two favourite yoga mats that I routinely use… interchangeably.

They each have things I love about them and depending on my mood, it’s one or the other I rely on to provide my early morning flop practice pad.  For hungover achey, sluggish mornings, one is soft and gishy, offering me some much needed sinkage, but requires a towel for grip (I have a dandy one I’ll be sure to post about in the coming days!;)) and the other, for more energetic mornings, is thinner, made out of recycled tires, I think, and grips like a sonofagun!  Oh… I forgot to add my favourite go-to mat for travel: my recently acquired YogaMatic- which I so very much LOVE!

As I like my yoga hot, things can get a little funky. And since I practice primarily in the privacy of my own hovel, I am not under any pressure to keep up any pretence of mat hygiene and the funkiness can tend to grow and grow until I can’t stand the smell of myself oozing out of the polluted pores of my mats.  Until… Love My Mat!

I know, there are all kinds of home-made solutions to take care of mat smelliness.  But, after the first cleanse to wash away the factory smell and enhance the grab of a new mat, I’ve just never been bothered- judge not, por favor!- and the mats get put away with a new layer of me to infuse their every fibre.  Actually, I have to come clean… I have tried to mix up my own solutions, but I’ve always had trouble finding the right combination of scents that don’t leave me nauseous.  At the very least I’m used to the smell of me.   Again, until… Love My Mat!

Love My Mat offers the perfect fusion of fresh scented essential oils that leave your mat smelling clean and effectively disinfected.  More importantly, it’s a scent that doesn’t offend with daily use, in fact laying face-down on any of my mats is that much more pleasant because of it!  Love My Mat is also completely organic and so very easy!  And for the me, the quick spritz, wipe and go is essential to maintaining a habit of (almost;)) daily mat hygiene.

Another treat… Love My Mat isn’t just for yoga mats, it’s also a wonderful linen and upholstery spray too.  If my office chair could speak, it would certainly thank me… or Love My Mat!

West Coast or East Coast… Pick Your Wanderlust!

Wanderlust is a retreat unlike any other… and it ain’t just for California gurls anymore.

The two-year-old yoga-slash-concert extravaganza will offer two locations for the summer of 2011, appealing to the green-, yogi-, and folk- hearted on both coasts.  If you can’t make it out to California, maybe you’ve a hankerin’ for maple syrup and an extra excuse to get to Vermont is in order!  An added bonus, they are a month apart, so you’ve plenty of time to save your pennies not missing one in favour of the other.

The details, instructors and musicians, are still to be announced next month, but if last year’s line-up is any indication (the likes of Shiva Rea, Baron Baptiste, Doug Swenson and Moby, Bassnectar, Brazilian Girls, respectively) then these retreats will be sure NOT to disappoint.

The beautiful thing about Wanderlust, it isn’t just a retreat for yoga-loving singles.  Families are welcome and encouraged, with the Wanderkind Kids Program, presented last year by Om Kids Yoga, Truckee.  It was the number one spot on site for kids to have an exceptionally cool experience, custom tailored to the interests of Wanderlust families.

Oh, Deer… Meat. It’s What’s For Dinner

I thought it would be an interesting exercise to challenge my readership today.  See how many of you I might alienate in just one post!

Let me preface with a little history.

I flirted with vegetarianism waaa-aaaay back in my very early twenties.  Not surprisingly, it was during my university years… where, one morning, nause0us after an evening binging on alcohol, Doritos and a frying pan of soot encrusted fried mystery meat, I swore off.

Not the alcohol.  Not the Doritos.  Just the meat.  For almost three years.

My first taste of meat came again two and a half days into what would be an adventure of a lifetime, several months traveling in Central America.  There I was, the palest and freckliest of Canadians, alone, scared, with nary a word of Spanish, half starved, having eaten nothing but the peanuts saved from my flight… I succumbed to familiarity and comfort and needing only to know numbers up to five… “Combo Uno, por favor.”

And that was it.  Three years of clean, green living essentially eradicated with a Big Mac.

I said I loved yoga.  I didn’t say I had principles.

I cannot deny that since allowing meat into my diet, and certainly after having kids, it has become a staple most nights a week.  We try to limit the red meat, adding more chicken, of course, as well as pork.  Probably not enough fish, I’m guessing, but I get it in here and there.

With all the hoopla over the quality of meat production lately, with movies such as Food, Inc. we, like so many other families across North America, have begun to question the role of meat in our family’s diet.  Between the conditions in which cattle, pigs and chickens are raised in the industry of meat production as well as the increased use of antibiotics and the questionable diets, it’s really made eating meat a more dubious endeavor than ever before.

Between the quality and health issues of large-scale meat production and ever-growing economic concerns, the viability of conventional meat consumption has been brought into question. Which brings me to the prospect of adding more wild game meats to one’s diet.

Game isn’t just for NRA sympathizing rednecks anymore.  It’s going mainstream.

Sure, venison has always held it’s place on the expensive menus of frou-frou restaurants, but increasingly, grocer’s conventional meat coolers are giving way to game farms and even hunting itself, with both growing in popularity as people are taking the time to learn more about where to find game meats, foul and mammal, even learning the art of hunting for themselves.

With the known health benefits, but also more and more for being a less expensive alternative, it’s making it worth people’s while to consider game as a part of their diets.

For those who object to the hunting, there probably isn’t much I can say to change your mind.  As one who formerly opposed the practice, I can appreciate the arguments.  However, as one of the newly converted- my suburban born and bred, University of Virgina educated, Engineer of a husband killed his first deer last year and landed his second just last week- I also appreciate that the animal I’m eating, up until ending up in my freezer, lived freely, eating a diet of grasses for which it was intended- green, as green can be!- and, I like to think, he probably had the opportunity to procreate heartily and enthusiastically before his demise.  I know you can’t say that for any of the beef in your grocer’s freezer.

If you’d consider choosing game meat occasionally, let me point you over to a recent article that might clarify for you a little further….

Excavating Etsy: Ms. Yoga from The Willies

Whew… I’m back!  You know life can just take you in all kinds of directions and sometimes… sometimes the things you enjoy end up stuck on the backburner.

But, dear readers, it’s springtime… fresh, bright and inspiring… breathing new life into my yoga practice and into this here ol’ blog, MommyOm.

And so, in the spirit of fresh and new… have you considered your yoga space?  Perhaps it needs a little pick-me-up and, through the wonders of Etsy, I have a unique idea to spruce up your walls with a little yoga folk art.

The Willies offer the cutest, most folksie and interesting yoga themed prints to dress up your walls and offer a little hand-made inspiration.  Aptly named Ms. Yoga, these prints “are the whimsical, handmade creation of Sam Willoughby. Each Willie has its own character and no two are the same.”

“The Willies like being around nature therefore, many accompanying objects of art have been created: flowers, trees, birds, rabbits and such. Many of the smaller pieces could sit on a table top and perhaps brighten up a small space in your home or office.”

Ms. Yoga would love to be a part of your inspirational space just as I am happy to be back as part of your yoga surfing!
